Whipple Lineage

According to PlacesNamed.com, "Whipple" is the 2,363rd most popular last name in the U. S.

One of the wonderful things about this name is a man who bears it. Lawrence Whipple was one of the sweetest, most interesting men I have ever met. He was my husband's paternal grandfather, who sadly passed away in July 2003.

Lawrence believed that the family is related the William Whipple who signed the Declaration of Independence. Many Whipples believe this. In this case, it is not true. That Whipple, the Declaration signer, belonged to a different line. Our line of Whipples is descended from Capt. John Whipple, born about 1617 in England. He was one of the first Whipples in the Colonies. (See the Whipple website for more information about him, and his descendants.)

William Henry

William Henry was born on 8 Apr 1849, in Corinth, Saratoga County, New York and died in 1934, in New York state. He married Ella Olds (b. about 1857). The 1880 census for Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York shows "Henry" Whipple living in the household of his father-in-law, "Mils" (his tombstone reads "Milo") Olds, with his wife, and their first child Bertha. I still don't have exact dates of death for William or Ella, or where they are buried.

Nothing further is known about him, or about Ella. They were my husband's gg-grandparents. Their son George Olds was his great-grandfather.

Aug 2003 Update: I found information on a 1855 New York census that may prove to be this man. In July, I found information that confirmed this.
In 1855, George Whipple (38), his wife Mary A. (24), children William H. (6), Eveline E. (4), Josephine (2), and "infant" (2 mos.), and George's father William P. Whipple (72) are all living together in Greenfield, New York.

Additionally, I found information transcribed from a Greenfield cemetery that gives a bit more information on George, Mary, William P. and William's wife Lydia. They are buried in the District #5 cemetery. Dates for George: b. 1816, d. 8 Apr1864 (47y/5m/16d), Mary d. 1 Apr 1882, William P.: b. 1783, d. 2 Jan1856 (73y/0m/17d), and Lydia: b. 1786, d. 20 Sep 1852 (66y/4m). There's also a child George Myron "son of George and Mary Whipple": b. 1863, d. 4 Dec 1865 (2y/4m/19d).

Since I was looking, I also tried to locate a burial for Ella's parents. I found them in Bailey Cemetery in Greenfield. Milo A. Olds: b. 1824, d. 7 Nov 1895 (71y /3m /21d) Listed in the 1871 Saratoga County business report as shoe maker and farmer of 30 acres of Great Lot #3, Allotment 17, with a Greenfield Center PO address. Sarah Olds: b.1822, d. 24 Apr 1890 (68y 04m 03d).

George Olds

George Olds Whipple was born in 1880 in New York state. He died in 1927 in Bradgate, Humboldt County, Iowa. He was married to Lizzie Mae Millward (1887-1940) in 1906 in Gilmore City, Humboldt County, Iowa. They had at least 10 children together, possibly 12. Their son Lawrence Millward is my husband's grandfather.

Lawrence Millward

Lawrence Whipple married Virginia Lorraine Rauhaus on February 20th, 1943. They have 4 living children: James (my father-in-law), Gail, Twila and Martha.

He drove a bulldozer and helped to build the great Alaskan Highway. For much of the first year of their marriage, he was away from home, working on the Highway. (For more information, try A Reader's Guide to the Alaskan Highway: books and other media about this WWII construction project.)

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. (Click on the logo for more information.) After a long illness, Lawrence passed away on 21 July 2003. He will be missed.

Marcus James
"Marc"

My husband, Marc, is an intimidatingly intelligent man. He has degrees in physics and law, and is a federally licensed patent attorney. He also understands computers and what makes them work. If that's not scary, I don't know what is! He's also the joy of my life, next to our daughter.

Upon graduating from high school, he went to Drake University in Des Moines, IA, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He met me there, when we were freshmen, and we married in June of 1992, after college graduation. With his sights set on intellectual property and patent law, we moved to Chicago, IL so he could attend John Marshall Law School. He graduated with his Juris Doctor in Law in 1995, and then passed the Illinois Bar exam, and the Federal Patent Bar exam.
