Fruits Lineage

According to PlacesNamed.com, "Fruits" is the 35,808th most popular last name in the U. S.

My ggg-grandmother was a Fruits. Barbara Ellen Fruits (1860-1931) was married to Henry Thomas Bettice (1832-1889). According to Indiana marriage records, she was married five times, altogether.

The research about George Fruits was done by someone else, I won't take the credit for it. I was able to connect my gg-grandmother to Barbara Ellen, and the rest clicked into place.

George

George Fruits is listed in the 1977 edition of Guinness Book of World Records as one of the longest living human beings on record. He was born 2 January 1762 in Baltimore, Maryland, and died at the age of 114 on 6 August 1876 in Alamo, Indiana. He is also commonly regarded as the last surviving Revolutionary War veteran (though this is hard to authenticate). He was the son of George (born in Germany) and Margaret Fruits and was one of 9 children. He was my 5th g-grandfather.

He married Catherine Stonebraker in Ohio in 1806; they had 13 children. One of their sons, William Jason, was my gggg-grandfather.

William Jason

Willam Jason Fruits was born 16 January 1831 in Montgomery County, Indiana. He died in Waynetown, Montgomery County, Indiana on 23 September 1904 and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery there with his second wife, Emanda Thomas.

His first wife was Louisa Jones (14 September 1931 - 25 October 1862), and their child Barbara Ellen Fruits was my ggg-grandmother. Louisa is buried in McCormick Cemetery, Montgomery County, Indiana.

Barbara Ellen

Barbara's first husband was Henry Thomas Bettice. She married him in 1880, Montgomery County, Indiana. He died in 1898. Together, they had four (known) children; their only daughter Dessie Ann was my gg-grandmother.

After Henry died, leaving her with 4 children to raise, she married Moses Shanks in 1899, Frank Gregory in 1902, Edwin Purple in 1906, and Frank B. Martin in 1909. All four of those marriages are recorded in the Fountain County Marriage Records.

Barbara herself died 1 April 1931, and is buried in "Mound Cemetery, near Foster, Indiana." There is an Upper Mound Cemetery on State Road 136 near Covington, Fountain County, Indiana, and there is also a Lower Mound located on old Route 63, north of Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana. She's not in Lower Mound, because some kind soul has transcribed the occupants of that cemetery; George and Dessie (Barbara's daughter) Martin are there, but Barbara is not. Foster is in Warren County, so I don't know what cemetery the researcher is referring to as "Mound."

The next time I'm in Indiana, I'll go see if I can find her.
