My father's maternal grandmother was Emma Magdalene Cannon. Everyone called her "Mimi," she didn't want to be called "grandma." She was married to James Lorenzo Thompson. She died in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1967.

Tom and his sisters used to travel with their mother Mabel by train to visit. Dad doesn't remember much about Mimi, except that she dipped snuff. Supposedly, she also has some Native American heritage somewhere, but we have no way of knowing that at this time. The picture above does tend to corroborate that family legend, and there were a number of Indian tribes in Alabama (and still are today). She preferred being called "Mimi" to "Grandma" - perhaps she never felt old enough to be a grandma, or being called one made her feel old...

Callie [Cannon] Dickinson
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moore Funeral Home for Mrs. J. L. (Callie) Dickinson, 95, of Hattiesburg, who died Jan. 18, 1988 at Methodist Hospital.
The Rev. David Steele and Dr. Ralph Brand will officiate. Internment will be in Highland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Danny Dickinson, Tommy Dickinson, Ronnie Dickinson, Buddy Dickinson, W. L. Dickinson and Junior Dickinson.
Mrs. Dickinson was a native of Butler, Ala., and a member of the Westover Baptist Church. She was preceeded in death by her husband, J. L. Dickinson, and three sons, James Dickinson, Lavon Dickinson and Grady Dickinson.
Survivors include five sons, Lavelle Dickinson and J. R. Dickinson, both of Hattiesburg, Lloyd Dickinson of Sumrall, Horace Dickinson of Clinton and Milton Dickinson of McComb; 28 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lavelle Dickinson
Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Moore Funeral Home for Lavelle Dickinson, 65, of Hattiesburg, who died Feb. 6, 1989 at Methodist Hospital.
The Rev. David Steel will officiate. Internment will be in Highland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Dickinson, Lloyd Dickinson Jr., Mark Dickinson, Ronnie Dickinson, Tony Pucylowski, and W. L. Dickinson.
Mr. Dickinson was a native of Hattiesburg and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Arnold Line Methodist Church and had worked as a mechanic for Marshall Durbin for 15 years before his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Dickinson of Hattiesburg; five sons, James Edward Dickinson of Lumberton, Cecil Lavelle Dickinson of Petal and James Frederick Dickinson, Danny Dickinson and Richard Dickinson, all of Hattiesburg; three daughters, Carolyn Bounds of Sumrall, Catherine Bowler of Hattiesburg and Kay Odom of Seminary; seven stepdaughters, Virginia Herrin amd Betty Graves, both of Collins, Marjean Thompson, Ann Bates and Rita Breazeale, all of Seminary, and Carolyn Norris and Theresa Norris, both of Sumrall; one stepson, Thomas Carter of Seminary; 19 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several step-grandchildren; and four brothers, Milton Dickinson of McComb, J. R. Dickinson of Hattiesburg, Horace Dickinson of Jackson, and Lloyd Dickinson of Sumrall.
Visitation will begin at 5:30 tonight at the funeral home.
